May 2002: Offroading and Hiking in Utah

Drive from San Diego to Beaver Drive from Beaver to Horseshoe Canyon Horseshoe Canyon Wild Horse Canyon Capitol Reef National Park / Cassidy Arch Capitol Reef National Park / Hickman Bridge Petrified Forest / Calf Creek Bryce Canyon / Cedar Breaks Hoover Dam Beaver Horseshoe Canyon Goblin Valley Capitol Reef National Park Circle Cliffs Escalante During the first week of May, I traveled with some friends from the San Diego Hiking Club through Utah. We were 14 people, equipped with five Jeeps, one pickup-truck, and two SUVs (This totaled to a lot of ground clearance). We hiked through narrow slot canyons and wide open spaces, went into a dark cave, had a fierce snowball fight, visited two National Parks, squashed (unintentionally) one scorpion and one mouse, explored a mine, had great campfires, went to bed early (not me), got up early (hell for me), had ice-cold showers (the only way to get me awake), and climbed on high rocks and boulders.

We saw lots of ancient rock art, impressive sandstone arches, a dead cow, lots of deer, some colorful doves, hoodoos, goblins, a petrified forest, the one and only waterfall of Southern Utah (at least it seems so), the surface of the moon (at least the moon cannot be more hostile than one of the places we were driving through), lonely buttes, mighty folds of the Earth's crust, a "Trabbi", one of the largest dams in the world, and starry nights.

The blue line on the map below shows our travel route. Just click on the yellow fields with a day number to see the illustrated travelogue of each day, or simply

Press Start

The yellow stars show the places where we stayed over night. Move your mouse over the stars to see the names of the places. If you move your mouse over the yellow day-fields without clicking, you'll see the destinations of each day. This does not work with Netscape :-(

The trip to Utah was not the only excitement that May was able to offer. I also attended a meeting in Boulder, Colorado, and went windsurfing to Lake Isabella over Memorial Day weekend. I have done the same trip in 2000 and 2001. The wind has always been strong, and this year was no exception.
