September 2007 - Part 2: Werdenfelser Land

After the conference in Davos, I made a short trip to Garmisch and spent some time with my mom and friends. We went up to the Laber with a small cable car, visited the Abbey of Ettal, and circumnavigated the Staffelsee with a boat. The weather couldn't have been better.

The Laber The Laber is a small mountain next to Oberammergau, about 10 miles north of Garmisch. It is a prime location for enjoying a view of the Wetterstein mountain range and the landmarks of Garmisch-Partenkirchen - the Alpspitze and Zugspitze. From there, I walked to the Ettaler Mandl, a limestone needle with a great 360° view.

Kloster Ettal The "Abbey of Ettal" includes a lavishly decorated baroque church, a boarding school run by Benedictine monks, and a distillery and cheese factory, which are open to the public.

Das blaue Land The area around the small town of Murnau is known as the "Blue Land" because the distant summits of the Alps often appear in soft blue hues and may be reflected in the many lakes of this area. My mom and I were traveling around the picturesque Staffelsee on a tour boat.

Zugspitze in the summer I also visited the Environmental Research Station Schneefernerhaus, located below the summit of Zugspitze. The building was originally a hotel but was remodelled during the last years to become a major facility for Atmospheric Research in Germany. From there, I walked back to the summit and took the Austrian cable down to Ehrwald. Don't miss Zugspitze in winter!
