March 2003: Palmer Station, Antarctica
Part 5: Magallanes

Back in Punta Arenas, I had two days for exploring the Magallanes. The province where Punta Arenas is located features harsh territories of bleak plains, fierce winds, and wilderness areas of extraordinary beauty crowned by the spiky peaks of Torres del Paine. I rented a car and drove to the Otway penguin rookery, or penguinero, featuring Magellanic Penguins. The next day, I drove to Puerto Natales, which is about 150 miles north-west of Punta Arenas. Unfortunately I ran out of time and had to abandon my original plan of continuing to Torres del Paine National Park. Yet I had a wonderful time and may return on one of these days.
