I was skiing twice at Mt. Baldy in January. The little and antique (chair lifts with wooden seats!) ski resort is located just north of Los Angeles and two hours from San Diego. Despite the small size, the resort offers great tree skiing on steep slopes. It is hard to believe that this is possible at 33° latitude!
