January 2002: Travels to South Pole and McMurdo Visitor parking in front of Scott Base. This requires a bit of explanation: Vehicles at Antarctic bases are usually equipped with electric engine heaters to facilitate starting at low temperatures. U.S. heaters run on 110 V, "Kiwi" heaters on 220 V. Therefore, the visitor "parking lot" at Scott Base is equipped with 110 V outlets for guests from McMurdo. The parking meter shouldn't be taken too seriously.
