December 2001: Christmas in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The dream of white Christmas came true when I visited my hometown Garmisch-Partenkirchen in December 2001. I arrived at 5 PM on Christmas eve, the temperature was about -10ºC with snow on the ground. During the following days I was skiing, visiting friends, and walking with my mom. The following photographs show the beauty of Garmisch's vicinity.

The first three pictures were taken near the Gerold lake. The mountains in the background belong to the Karwendel, a mountain ridge East of Garmisch.

Typical Bavarian farmhouse with a decorated gable. The people are living in front, the cattle in the back.

The Karwendelspitzen and the Viererspitz (Four-er peak). Try to find the four in the rock!

The Korbinianshütte with the Wörner in the background.

Moonrise over Soiernspitz.

On New Year's Eve I drove with some friends to Austria, we hiked two hours to the Kemater Alm, located at the foot of the Kalkögel, and stayed over night in the mountain hut, celebrating the beginning of 2002.

We sledged down from the hut the next day - it was fun!

Before I returned to San Diego the next day, I was hiking in the immediate vicinity of my hometown, on the "Farchanter Wiesn".
